Extended Health and Health Insurance Plans: does not bill Extended Health Plans, MSP, Medicare, Medicaid or any other insurance providers. You need to ask your extended health care provider to see if they cover e-counseling or face-to-face counseling with a registered social worker. Policies and plans often change. Online counselingis becoming more widely accepted as a therapeutic intervention, especially as cost, efficiency and access to services are being taken into consideration in provision of health care services.

In Canada, Health insurance or extended health benefits may reimburse counseling fees paid to Registered Social Workers. Some Employee Assistance Programs (EAP or EFAP) have covered costs of counselling with a Registered Social Worker if there has been prior approval. This will differ depending upon your place of residence. Be sure to check with your health benefit provider and your employer. Some organizations in British Columbia, Canada, who have been know to have reimbursed employees in the past are:

  • Workers Compensation Board
  • Telus (union employees only, not management)
  • University of Victoria (faculty and staff)
  • Central Mortgage and Housing Corporation
  • University of British Columbia's Student Health Plan
  • City of Vancouver
  • Bank of Montreal
  • BC Hydro
  • Canada Post
  • Insurance Corporation of BC
  • City of New Westminster
  • Department of Indian Affairs
